That quote is from Franklin D. Roosevelt, brought to our attention recently as we register participants for an immigration seminar we are putting together with the NACDL, ACLU and two national immigration lawyer groups.
Details: September 18th, 8 to 5, Hyatt at Crown Center, KCMO, lunch provided. Register with Cindy_Johnson@fd.org, or call Kirk or me.
Swag: FREE CLE, with one hour of ethics, top of the line national speakers.
Reason: Every criminal defense attorney, investigator and paralegal should attend this. A primary goal is to teach us the immigration consequences of our advice and actions in criminal cases. For example, what to do if a judicial order of deportation is a required part of the criminal plea? We all need to know more, to be more sensitive to these issues in every case, and to provide solid and consistent advice to our clients.
Second, though, is the likelihood of large-scale ICE raids on working immigrants. This is the reference to Postville, and if you have not read about it, do so NOW, links below. When one of those ambush raids hits your district, you will be called on -- as an AFD or panel counsel -- to defend those cases. You need to know the score before you walk on the field. This conference is where you will learn their ambush tactics, and the need for our united and informed response.
Here are excerpts from the flier:
